First-time mums who are induced before they reach 40 weeks are less likely to require an emergency caesarean, according to a new study by the National Institutes of Health in the US. Researchers recruited 6000 first-time mothers and found that of the 3000 who were induced at 39 weeks, only 18 per cent needed a C-section compared with 22 per cent who progressed with a natural birth. Those induced also had lower rates of hypertension and post-partum infection.
