nteresting article on the Mazda MX-5 from Donn Anderson [in New Zealand Classic Car Issue No. 327] … And rightly so that this fun roadster, now in its 28th year, has the cred to appear in a classic car magazine. The 1992 Limited model
I(of which just 30 were distributed to New Zealand) was briefly mentioned, but there has been little publicity relating to the other two Limited models specifically for New Zealand that followed.
The 1996 Special Equipment variant in metallic blue was available in just 25 units, and the pick of the bunch, the 1997 ‘M’ Limited of again 25 units and finished in metallic Merlot.
These limited editions are keenly sought by enthusiasts; indeed Canterbury is the home for both the lowest mileage examples of each of the three mentioned. An article on these special cars would be of interest, and can certainly be assembled for a group ‘test’.
In the meantime here are a couple of photos of the 1992 (Neo Green [below]) and 1997 (Merlot [left]) version.
Incidentally, while this may be anorak stuff, the limited edition illustration shown on page 66 [of Issue No. 327] and taken from the factory brochure was never badged as shown in NZ.
John Mcdonald We’ll definitely be following up with a story on these limited models, John. AFW
