If you just happen to have a rusty old Mercedes-benz 300SL Gullwing lying around waiting for some new panels, then here’s some good news.
Mercedes-benz has now stepped in and made factory-quality body parts available for the 1950s classic supercar. These panels are built to perfection by 3D scanning original 300 SL bodies and using that data to build the correct tooling. The panels are then handed over to specialist coachbuilders to be shaped and hand finished with wooden mallets, as it was done decades ago.
But don’t reach for the phone just yet, as these accurate body panels don’t come cheap — for example, a right front guard will cost you €11,900 ( NZ$20,215) plus freight, GST, and any other applicable charges.
