Sonny in the bubble
Dysart rider step closer to making Las Vegas bull riding dreams reality
DYSART cowboy Sonny Schafferius moved one step closer last weekend to realising one of his goals – qualifying for the PBR’s World Finals in Las Vegas on November 1–5.
Like many aspiring young bull riders Sonny has always dreamt of riding at this elite level.
For many it is simply a wistful dream but for Sonny, he has never lost focus.
He has worked hard and sacrificed a lot to get where he is right now.
The top 35 bull riders in the world compete at the PBR World Finals – riders just out of the 35 are often referred to as “in the bubble”. They are just on the brink of qualifying.
On the weekend Sonny was one of four Aussies (Troy Wilkinson reigning PBRA Champion, Nathan Burtenshaw PBRA 2017 Finals Champion and Lachlan Richardson World Finals qualifier) competing at the PBR’s Built Ford Tough Series event “Rumble In The Rockies” at Colorado Springs, Colorado.
He qualified as an alternate and was intent on making the most of the opportunity to earn valuable world points. He did not disappoint.
In round one he marked an 86 to place fourth in the round behind Derek Kolbaba (USA), Fabiano Vieira (Brazil) and Eduardp Aparecido (Brazil) – currently the world’s number one.
Into the second round and Sonny made another qualified ride for 85 points that commentators described as “picture perfect”.
Overall, the Dysart native ended up fifth but more importantly earned valuable world points and has moved to number 41 in the world rankings.
With only a couple of events left to secure a spot at the world finals, there is a lot riding on the results over the next couple of weeks.
Sonny, along with his Aussie travelling buddies, will be making the most of it and is set on making Las Vegas.
It is going to big a big few months for these guys.
Following the World Finals, the Australian team will be heading straight to Edmonton Canada for the Global Cup on November 9–11.
From there, we will be welcoming them all back home for Townsville’s Iron Cowboy on November 17–18; two huge nights of great bull riding action that will feature not only the best bull riders in Australia but many international riders.
Tickets are on sale now, so get in early to avoid missing out. Visit www.pbraustralia.com.au.
