Big fight a draw

NewsMail - - SPORT -

BOXING: The middleweight superfight between Gennady Golovkin and Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez in Las Vegas has been declared a draw. The result means that ‘GGG’ Golovkin retains his three world middleweight titles. Billed the fight of the year, the battle lived up to the hype as both men traded blows for 12 enthralling rounds. The 35-year-old Golovkin, making his Las Vegas debut, kept his WBC, WBA and IBF belts. But the judges could not agree, with one awarding it to Canelo 118-110, another to Golovkin 115-114 and a third making it 114-114. Both want a rematch.

Journey worth it CRICKET:

West Indies skipper Carlos Brathwaite, 29, made a 13,000km round trip for just one game but it was worth it as he led his team to a 21-run win over England in the one-off T20 international at Durham. Brathwaite, who smashed four sixes off four balls in the final over of Ben Stokes as the Windies won the World Twenty20 final last year, did the damage with the ball this time, taking 3-20 in 3.3 overs as the home team could only make 155 in reply to the visitors’ 9-176 at a chilly and rainswept Riverside.

Redknapp booted FOOTBALL:

Veteran manager Harry Redknapp has been axed as manager of second-tier English club Birmingham City. Redknapp, who has managed Tottenham, Portsmouth and Southampton and others in a lengthy career, was told of the club’s decision after a 3-1 home defeat by Preston. The 70-year-old was hailed a saviour after keeping the team in the Championship last season. But despite a number of signings in the transfer window, the Blues have lost six games in a row and have just four points from eight league matches.
