We can be proud of gun laws

AUSTRALIA’S gun laws are something to be proud of.

True, they will always be hotly contested and debated and there are many who are of the opinion that we should have an American-style “right to bear arms”.

I am not one of those people.

Recently I chatted with a friend from overseas who was amazed at what we had achieved.

He couldn’t help talking about how safe it must feel to live in Australia.

A very far-fetched and fanciful argument pro-gun people often make is that without guns, people have no protection from some kind of imagined, future government “takeover”.

If someday, some government wants to rise up and take us over, they’ll have a lot more than guns at their disposal anyway.

For now, let’s just focus on the reality – we have a safer, happier country to live in thanks to our gun laws.
