Brisbane rider Ethan Viviers can’t believe how lucky he is.

The cyclist was competing in the 100-lap Madison at the Auswide Bank International Cycling Spectacular when he was involved in a frightening crash.

The 16-year-old was one of four riders that fell off their bike on the 8th lap of the race at the Kevin Brogden Velodrome. Coming out of turn one, Viviers lost control of his bike and was thrown over the velodrome into a parked car after the rider in front of him fell.

“I just went straight over the top of him, over the fence,” he said. “There was a car there on the other side, which was good, it saved the fall.

“My knee is just bruised, lucky there was nothing else.” Viviers admitted he closed his eyes as he was bracing for the impact and hoped he didn’t damage the car too much.

Joining Vivers over the fence was New Zealander Jared Pidcock who was taken to hospital with bleeding knuckles and concussion.

Angus Collins and Ben Foster were the other two involved but suffered minor injuries.

When the race got restarted the organisers reduced the number of sprints, to three, to make the race safer. The race was won by the Austria’s Stefan Matzner and Andreas Muller who took out the last two sprints of the race including the one at the end.

“We’ve had a couple of races together,” Matzner said.

“The last two sprints he (Muller) was perfectly preparing them so the only job that I had was going full gas for a lap.

Muller said he can’t wait to see his name inscribed on the trophy.

“It was a good comeback so I was happy,” he said.

“I will look at it next year to see if it is spelt correctly.”

Spectacular organiser Jason Templeman said the Spectacular would review the incident ahead of next year’s event.

“It’s cycling, it could come down to a number of things,” he said.

“Everything was well within the rules and it was signed off by the chief commissar.”
