HAPPY TALE WITH SQUIRT

North Coast Times - - OPINION - Lucy Jarvis

SQUIRT is one of the Staffy And Bully Breed Rescue group’s success stories, born in a pound a year ago and handreared for 16 weeks until she was adopted.

SABBR foster carer co-ordinator Megan Forrest said the group was called to a pound in January 2016, where a pregnant staffy went into labour.

The volunteers helped her give birth to three puppies before rushing her to a vet for an emergency caesarean for another three puppies.

While most of the puppies were healthy, Miss Forrest said Squirt was very sick, weighing just 93g, and she had to feed her every hour around the clock.

“She was handreared by myself from 48 hours to 16 weeks,” the Quinns Rocks resident said.

Miss Forrest said the foster family in Tapping who looked after the mother and siblings eventually adopted Squirt.

“She does really well – she has an amazing quality of life,” she said.

“She has met lots of dogs; she goes down to the beach.”

Miss Forrest said she initially adopted a dog from the group six years ago.

“Once I adopted him, I became more involved as a volunteer, then took on role as foster care coordinator,” she said.

The volunteer-based group relies on donations from the public, both in kind and in dollars, and its unpaid committee of eight co-ordinate dog rescues and surrenders throughout the year, helped by about 150 volunteers.

Last year it rescued about 100 dogs, but Miss Forrest said the numbers fluctuated each year, depending largely on how many puppies were born.

She said they also offered advice to pet owners on the needs of bull breeds.

To raise awareness during National Pet Adoption Day, Staffy And Bully Breed Rescue carers and pets will be at PETstock in Butler on Sunday, February 5, between 10am and 2pm.

The initiative, which is a partnership between the stores and not-for-profit animal rescue organisation PetRescue, seeks to find homes for all homeless pets across Australia.
