Telethon language centre puts Harry on the right track to speech

INTENSIVE speech and language support in Wembley is helping Butler boy Harry Brocklesby learn and gain confidence.

Harry goes to the Telethon Speech and Hearing (TSH) centre two days a week, and attends pre-primary classes at St James Anglican School in Alkimos.

The five-year-old’s parents Marianne and Samuel spent years trying to find answers for his limited communication skills and development, learning he could be autistic when he was three years old.

“After the initial diagnosis we were absolutely devastated to have our greatest fears confirmed, but also frustrated that our concerns had been dismissed so many times,” Mrs Brocklesby said.

“As a teacher, I was also far too aware of the potentially serious consequences for both his academic and social development and the hurdles that he was likely to encounter.”

Harry has been receiving intensive speech and language support from TSH in Wembley for the past two years and his progress has surprised his parents.

“It’s beyond our expectations; the progress he has made is unbelievable,” Mrs Brocklesby said.

“We are so pleased with all the support he has had from Telethon school.

“Harry arrived at TSH as a very quiet little boy who couldn’t even say his own name.

“Since joining he has continued to surprise and delight us with his unbelievable development.

“He is now very confident and has an insatiable appetite for learning.”

The Butler resident said attending mainstream school had been good for Harry’s social development and it had been “surprisingly easy” for his classmates to accept he was there part-time.

“Friends and family are astounded by the development in Harry’s receptive and expressive language,” she said.

Harry is one of two ambassadors for this year’s Get LOUD! fundraising initiative, which encourages people to wear their boldest and brightest outfits to work or school.

Money raised will enable TSH to provide intensive therapy services to the many children with hearing, speech and language impairments.
