Cycle path petition

THE Two Rocks Yanchep Residents Association has started a petition for a dual-use path from Yanchep to Two Rocks.

Secretary Lorraine Jackson said residents wanted the path for cyclists and pedestrians to connect the suburbs, including the semi-rural estates on Breakwater Drive.

Copies of the petition are available at the Yanchep Community Centre, Locals Surf Shed, Neptunes Cafe and Liquor Barons store.

The petition, announced at the group’s September meeting, follows discussion about the need for cycling facilities at the August meeting.

Northern Beaches Cycling Club’s Chris Howard said although members started out riding on Two Rocks Road, many road cyclists now avoided it because it was no longer “a very quiet stretch”.

“We’ve been actively involved for many years now trying to get continuous cycling networks,” he said.

“My experience is council need to be putting the onus on developers to have meaningful connections.

“Council can take responsibility to make sure the local structure plans talk to each other.”

Dr Howard said “old thinking” approaches to planning excluded pedestrians and cyclists from traffic management plans, but some changes were occurring.

“They have started it further down with green laneways on side roads,” he said.

“That’s often where a cyclist will get T-boned.

“It now looks like a designated cycleway.”

At the August meeting, Yanchep resident Alex Figg asked if there were plans for a path to run along Marmion Avenue as part of the roadwidening project.

“That’s the big missing link,” he said.

Wanneroo Mayor Tracey Roberts said staff were working on the design for the dual carriageway.

Dr Howard is one of 14 candidates vying for three North Coast ward seats in this month’s local government election.

The Two Rocks Yanchep Residents Association will hold its October meeting a week early.

The October 16 meeting at the Yanchep Community Centre will start 7.30pm.
