Twin Towers-Wiley centuries give Melville strong lead
PAIR TAKE CONTROL OF EITHER END OF INNINGS
MELVILLE look to have a strong lead going into day 2 after posting an imposing 6-304 on Saturday against Wanneroo at Tompkins Park, with centuries to Luke Towers and Matthew Wiley.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, Melville got out of the blocks slowly, losing 3-80 early in the innings.
The Roos’ Kyle Millar (2-44) took two of those wickets as his side’s best bowler, with Matthew Spoors taking 2-66 to be the next best.
However, a brilliant 120-run partnership between Towers and Wiley catapulted the score to 200.
Although Towers was dismissed at 4-200 for a brilliant 111 from 204 (including 13 fours and two sixes), Wiley stepped up to take control of the back half of the innings, just as Towers had done for the first half of the game.
Wiley found another partner in Fraser Hay, adding a further 58 runs during their fifth-wicket stand, before Matthew Spoors knocked over Hay and Ryan Duffield in the space of two balls.
However, Wiley remained unfazed, scoring his hundred as he and Matthew Bowdler extended the total to 6-304 at the end of the day’s play.
