Twin Tow­ers-Wi­ley cen­turies give Melville strong lead

MELVILLE look to have a strong lead go­ing into day 2 af­ter post­ing an im­pos­ing 6-304 on Sat­ur­day against Wan­neroo at Tomp­kins Park, with cen­turies to Luke Tow­ers and Matthew Wi­ley.

Af­ter win­ning the toss and elect­ing to bat, Melville got out of the blocks slowly, los­ing 3-80 early in the in­nings.

The Roos’ Kyle Mil­lar (2-44) took two of those wick­ets as his side’s best bowler, with Matthew Spoors tak­ing 2-66 to be the next best.

How­ever, a bril­liant 120-run part­ner­ship be­tween Tow­ers and Wi­ley cat­a­pulted the score to 200.

Al­though Tow­ers was dis­missed at 4-200 for a bril­liant 111 from 204 (in­clud­ing 13 fours and two sixes), Wi­ley stepped up to take con­trol of the back half of the in­nings, just as Tow­ers had done for the first half of the game.

Wi­ley found an­other part­ner in Fraser Hay, adding a fur­ther 58 runs dur­ing their fifth-wicket stand, be­fore Matthew Spoors knocked over Hay and Ryan Duffield in the space of two balls.

How­ever, Wi­ley re­mained un­fazed, scor­ing his hun­dred as he and Matthew Bowdler ex­tended the to­tal to 6-304 at the end of the day’s play.
