Club upgrade finished

THE Undercroft Bridge Club celebrated the opening of its refurbished clubroom at Percy Doyle Reserve in Duncraig on April 8.

Formed 45 years ago, the club now has more than 450 members, which meant it had outgrown the previous clubroom facility that was constructed in 1993.

In 2014, the club submitted an application to the City of Joondalup for a club-funded facility upgrade and in 2015, the council agreed to undertake these works.

The refurbishment included upgrades to the hall, meeting room and toilets, and an 11m building extension to allow the club to run morning, afternoon and evening sessions for regular games, lessons, tournaments, meetings and other events.

The project cost about $450,000, which was funded by the City with a club contribution of $140,000.

Club president Graham Milward said the refurbishment was the culmination of many approaches to the City and years of fundraising.

“The redeveloped clubroom is a tribute to current and past members of the club whose stamina and belief in the project never waned,” he said.

“The club will now be able to cater for an increased range of bridge playing activities including additional teaching programs and possibly mentoring support.”

Joondalup Mayor Troy Pickard thanked Hickey Constructions for their contribution and the club “who worked closely with the City throughout the project’s history”.

Competition sessions are held on Mondays to Saturdays at 12.15pm and Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings at 7.15pm, with a learning session each Saturday at 8.30am.
