THE tradition of the Chinese lantern festival helped inspire the exhibition Lights by Dream-Works – The Experience at Crown Pyramid.

Event director Keith Brown said they had taken the marvel of Dream-Works and its major movie characters from Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, Madagascar and How To Train Your Dragon and brought them to life in a 3D lantern experience.

“Lanterns were welded out of steel to get the 3D design and then stitched and glued with real silk to bring the illumination,” Brown said. “It was hours of construction.” Exhibition-goers will also get to meet Shrek, Po, Alex the Lion and special guests Poppy and Branch from Trolls.

Children can make their own Viking shield and lantern, sketch drawings of the movie characters, go on rides and enjoy a cinema experience.

“This was built to go to Her Majesty’s Museum in London for Christmas and we were able to secure it after London to bring it to Australia,” Brown said. “The tour has only been to Melbourne in Australia, so Perth will see it second.”

When asked who his favourite Dream-Works character was, Brown did not even hesitate. “My favourite is Shrek,” he said. “Everyone knows him and he looks fantastic in some of the major parts of the exhibition.
