SUS­TAIN­ABLE House Day will see close to 30 WA homes open­ing their doors to the pub­lic on Sun­day, Septem­ber 17, in a move to in­spire peo­ple to­wards ‘greener’ liv­ing.

Es­tab­lished in 2001, the na- tional event al­lows the pub­lic to see and learn from the best en­vi­ron­men­tally re­spon­si­ble homes in Aus­tralia.

Visitors to the homes can ex­pect to learn how to lower en­ergy bills and un­der­stand the prin­ci­ples of good home de­sign as well as get tips and ad­vice on so­lar power, home bat­ter­ies, of­f­grid liv­ing, in­no­va­tive build­ing ma­te­ri­als and more.

Homes will be open to the pub­lic from 10am-4pm. All visitors must reg­is­ter to at­tend at www.sus­tain­able­house­ to ob­tain the open houses’ ad­dresses. A list of WA homes is at­b­zoc.

This Craigie home fea­tures un­der­ground rain­wa­ter stor­age, so­lar sky­lights, so­lar power and an or­ganic per­ma­cul­ture gar­den.

This se­cret hide­away in West­min­ster has a biofil­tra­tion pool and is kept cool by breezes flow­ing di­rectly over the wa­ter.
