Trishaw a chance to get wind in hair

North Coast Weekender - - Opinion -

SORRENTO mother-of-three Alanagh Godderidge wants to put the wind back in seniors’ hair and see them break away from more traditional outings to shopping centres and cafes.

Already in talks with enthusiastic aged care providers, Mrs Godderidge – of Cycling Without Age – is fundraising $16,000 for a trishaw designed to help elderly people on a bike despite their physical capabilities.

“I’m always down the coast and I cycle my son to school and I just think well I might as well be cycling and getting someone else with me who is not able to do it themselves,” Mrs Godderidge said.

“You’ve got the cargo-carrier at the front; I call it a couch on wheels because it’s quite glam and it’s got a footrest, zip up blankets and a shelter that goes over them and it can carry 160kg of passengers.

“It’s got an electric motor fortunately.”

She said she could not wait to take people for a bike ride along the coast, something many seniors would not have experienced for decades.

“My girlfriend has a granny who is 94 and not mobile, so to get her in and out of the car to go to the shops and have a coffee is such a big deal for her, but imagine being able to rug her up, take her down the coast and ride her to Mullaloo and back,” she said.

“She wouldn’t have done that in 30 years, it’s just going to be gorgeous, I can’t wait.”

She wanted to get involved after watching a YouTube clip of a young Scottish doctor and volunteers taking out elderly residents and a BBC film on the initiative.

“When I see oldies out it’s often in shopping centres or at cafes and that’s lovely but it’s just nice to get them out and just get the wind in their hair because how often do they do that anymore,” she said.

“There was one woman on the video who said ‘it’s just like being in a Victorian carriage but without the horses’…. and another said ‘I haven’t been on a holiday in 15 years, I feel like I’ve had the best holiday ever’ and she’d only been out on an hour ride.”

Mrs Godderidge hopes to have the trishaw ready for summer and could buy it outright while she continues her fundraising campaign so it arrives from Denmark in time.

“With my friends who have been donating to the page, I’ve been saying I look forward to getting you and your grandma out together over summer; it’s just such a nice thing to do together,” she said.
