*THE Grains Re­search and De­vel­op­ment Cor­po­ra­tion (GRDC) is hold­ing a se­ries of work­shops on the sus­tain­able man­age­ment of in­sect pests in grain crops.

The work­shops will fea­ture pre­sen­ta­tions by lead­ing en­to­mol­o­gists and re­search and ex­ten­sion ex­perts who will dis­cuss with par­tic­i­pants key pest-re­lated is­sues that are of­ten en­coun­tered dur­ing the crop grow­ing sea­son.

The key out­come is de­vel­op­ing cost-ef­fec­tive man­age­ment strate­gies for re­gion­ally im­por­tant crops and pests.

Par­tic­i­pants will re­ceive ac­cess to a com­pre­hen­sive re­source kit in­clud­ing GRDC fact sheets, ute guides, course notes and pre­sen­ta­tions.

The work­shops will be held in Al­bury on Tues­day, April 8, Bendigo on Wed­nes­day, April 9 and Hor­sham on Thurs­day, April 10.

*AL­PACAS Joma are hold­ing an Al­paca fa­mil­iari­sa­tion day on Satur­day, April 26 at the stud’s Mer­ton prop­erty.

Start­ing at 10am, the day is a great op­por­tu­nity for new breed­ers and those who are in­ter­ested in get­ting in­volved to get ac­quainted and to gain ex­pe­ri­ence and con­fi­dence in han­dling al­pacas.

Work­shops to be held will cover catch­ing and hal­ter train­ing, ad­min­is­ter­ing in­jec­tions and drenches, toe nail trim­ming, assess­ment of nu­tri­tional lev­els, worm mon­i­tor­ing and drench­ing and fenc­ing, yards, shel­ter and wa­ter.

The fa­mil­iari­sa­tion day is free of charge and no book­ing is re­quired.

*North East Land­care is hold­ing the fol­low­ing events in April.

April 4: Se­crets to Suc­cess­ful Groups’ work­shop will be held start­ing at 9.45am to 3.30pm at the Old Court­house, Wil­liam Street, Yackan­dan­dah.

This work­shop will ben­e­fit those who are com­mit­tee mem­bers of a Land­care group who want to at­tract new mem­bers and to im­prove group decisions, as well as as­sist­ing those want­ing to brush up on the le­gal du­ties of com­mit­tee mem­bers.

April 15: A Baran­duda Land­care GIS Map­ping Work­shop will be held at the Wodonga Com­mu­nity Cen­tre start­ing at 5.30pm to 7.30pm.

Jill Daw­son will take you through the use of free map­ping soft­ware avail­able on the Depart­ment of En­vi­ron­ment and Pri­mary In­dus­tries web­site that can be used to gen­er­ate cus­tom maps of “your patch” use­ful for a whole range of func­tions.

*STOCKBOOK Live­stock Man­age­ment is spon­sor­ing a Prac­ti­cal Sys­tems elec­tronic iden­ti­fi­ca­tion field day on Thurs­day, April 10.

The field day will be held at Toland Merino at Vi­o­let Town where farm­ers can see how us­ing elec­tronic iden­ti­fi­ca­tion can re­duce la­bor costs and see how it is done with an on-farm demon­stra­tion.

*THE North East Cly­die Group is spon­sor­ing the Be­nalla Heavy Horse Driv­ing Day on Satur­day, May 3 at the Be­nalla Pony Club, Equine Park, Shep­par­ton Road, Be­nalla.

All heavy horses are wel­come, with ju­nior classes run­ning for chil­dren and their ponies.

Any adult ex­hibitor who is not a mem­ber of a heavy horse breed so­ci­ety must pay a ca­sual day in­sur­ance of $20, with non­mem­ber ju­nior ex­hibitors cost­ing $11.

There is no charge for class en­tries.

Har­ness and shoe­ing demon­stra­tions will run dur­ing the lunch break.

En­try is free with food avail­able all day.
