After a long summer and dry start to Autumn right across the region, the cooler nights and chill in the air have come as a welcome relief to most of us. But while the conditions may not have suited everyone, it’s proved to be a promising start for many of our local winemakers including Gapsted Wines which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2017. In this edition the team behind the business share their story, and how they plan to move the business forward in a competitive global market. Also celebrating a significant anniversary is the Milawa Cheese Company which turns 30 this year and has grown to become arguably one of the most recognised brands in the North East region, thanks to the vision and determination of the Brown family. Another family who made a more recent ‘tree change’ to the region are partners and writers Campbell Mattinson and Thalia Kalkipsakis, who are pleased to say they’re ‘living the dream’ while pursuing very different projects from their home base in Wangaratta. We also learn why Mt Buller is a popular place to be in any season from the people who call it home, find out what brought pastry chef Geoffrey Michael back home to Albury, meet champion trainer Rob Hickmott and discover how the Wangaratta Art Gallery is inspiring and surprising the next generation of art lovers. Rain, hail or shine, we hope you find some time to relax and enjoy these fascinating stories about the place we call home.
