Monichino Wines honour the past, look to the future
THE second half of 2015 was a time of highs and lows for Monichino Wines.
Late August saw the passing of beloved winery patriarch Carlo Monichino, who established Monichino Wines at the Katunga Vineyard in 1962.
Through hard work and dedication, Carlo and wife Margaret established the vineyard and opened the cellar door in 1972, and in the years that followed, he continued to grow new varieties and innovate.
His legacy will continue to live on, with his son Terry making wine in his own right, daughter Anna operating the winery and overseeing marketing and sales, and the winery now producing 27 varieties of wine bearing the Monichino name.
These varieties include Italian varieties, fortified wines, and much more to cater for every palate.
The Dookie Wine Show, held last September, saw the 2012 Monichino chardonnay win best in its class, the fourth time in a row the variety had achieved that feat.
The chardonnay is described as a full bodied, rich and enticing chardonnay, boasting lush American oak and vanilla aromas with burnt honey, melon and peach flavours on the palate.
Recent months also saw the opening of the new Café Tramontino at Cellar Door.
Boasting a modern European menu created from local ingredients, the café is run by executive chef Ryan Gibson, who has lived and worked in France and Europe, as well as in the Goulburn Valley.
The coming months see some enticing events being held at Monichino Wines.
A Farmgate to Plate degustation dinner will be held on Saturday, March 12, with the winery working in conjunction with Moira Shire and the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival to showcase a magnificent menu with matching premium Monichino Wines.
