Up­surge: Bay of Iis­landsl Arts Fes­ti­val (April 5-9) and the South­ern Lakes Fes­ti­val of Colour (April 4-10) have se­cured two stel­lar solo shows from the Ed­in­burgh Fes­ti­val Fringe: How to Keep an Alien is Ir­ish co­me­dian Sonya Kelly’s the­atri­cal mem­oir about bat­tling bu­reau­cracy in or­der to se­cure a visa for her Aus­tralian part­ner, Kate; Ev­ery Bril­liant Thing sees a child try­ing to fo­cus on the pos­i­tive fol­low­ing mum’s hos­pi­tal­i­sa­tion for de­pres­sion. Both fes­ti­val pro­grammes also in­clude Silo Theatre’s hi­lar­i­ous hit about New Zealand’s orig­i­nal celebrity chefs, Hud­son & Halls Live!, kooky cabaret star Lady Rizo and “red hot honky tonker” Tami Neil­son.
