AUCKLAND: THEN AND NOW
JENNY HAWORTH (PAVILON, $29.99)
Stacking photos of the same place taken decades apart has been a popular tradition for many years and this is hardly the first book to do so for a New Zealand location, but Haworth goes a little beyond the standard offering. Her text explores more thoroughly than most what has driven change over the years.
Auckland being Auckland, the past is not so much assimilated as obliterated. Many of these pictures are almost surreal – if not flat-out comical – in the vast difference between, say, Queen St Wharf then, with its stately Victorian stone buildings in view, and Queen St Wharf now, dominated by The Cloud. Excellent gift-giving at the price.
