Two wayward teens commandeer a Lada in road-trip comedy Goodbye Berlin, headliner of the free (yes, free!) German Film Festival (nationwide, September 5-October 8), which extends its borders to include flicks from neighbouring Austria and Switzerland. Also on the programme: Stefan Zweig: Farewell to Europe, a drama about the Austrian author who inspired Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel; Neo Rauch: Comrades and Companions, a documentary about of one of the most successful German painters of his generation; and Big & Little, a family movie about a 10-year-old who dreams of becoming a sumo wrestler.
Meanwhile, Celebrate Studio Ghibli (nationwide August 24-September 20) screens the acclaimed Japanese animation house’s complete 22-film catalogue, from the imaginative storytelling of Howl’s Moving Castle and Spirited Away to insightful documentaries.
