As the season draws closer, Hedland Water Polo Association will host a have-a-try night to encourage residents to get involved in the popular water sport.

Association president Brad Pawlenko said the night aimed to introduce Hedland residents to the sport in a friendly and non-competitive way.

“It’s a free night with no pressure to join a team — it’s just to have a try and get people down to the pool,” he said.

“Anyone who has ever thought about playing but wasn’t sure are encouraged to come down, try it out and see what it’s like.”

The have-a-try night will be held on Friday at Gratwick Aquatic Centre, with Flipperball beginning at 6pm and seniors starting at 7pm.

Pawlenko said all residents needed to do was bring swimwear and a towel, with the association putting on a sausage sizzle to refuel attendees after their dip in the pool.

“It doesn’t matter what your skill level is — everyone is welcome to come down, even if some just want to watch,” he said.

The water polo season is set to begin on Friday, October 20, with hopes for the competition to move to the South Hedland Aquatic Centre after the Christmas break if repairs are finished by then.
