Pool to stay open for two more weeks

Port Hedland residents will get an extra two weeks of heat relief as the Gratwick Aquatic Centre changes its closing date, adding an extra fortnight for the school holidays.

The Port Hedland pool will close at the end of the school holidays on Monday, April 30, rather than beforehand, to undergo much-needed maintenance, renewal and upgrade works.

The works include repairing of leaks in the main pool and the dive pool as well as works to balance tanks, pressure testing of pipes and the replacement of grout in the joints of the main pool.

Mayor Camilo Blanco said the closure was critical to the longevity of the Port Hedland pool.

“The pool at Gratwick Aquatic Centre is losing hundred of thousands of litres of water a week,” he said.

“There is critical maintenance needed to stop the leaks and it has to close to address that, same as with the South Hedland Aquatic Centre.

“The maintenance is for the good of the lifespan of the pool.”

The pool is scheduled to reopen in November but residents will still be able to cool off at the South Hedland Aquatic Centre during that time, with opening hours set to remain the same.
