A sizeable step up in power compared with the RX One kit, the twin RX 4 heads here are rated at 400Ws as opposed to just 100Ws. In our tests, they delivered enough power for an aperture of f/18 when placed two metres from the subject and fired through a translucent umbrella. The kit doesn’t actually include an umbrella; it contains two 66cm softboxes that give a wonderfully soft light for portraiture.

As with the RX One heads, power is controlled by up/down pushbutton switches, backed up by a digital display. Default increments are 1/10th of a stop, but you can customise this. Advanced slave modes enable triggering from a regular flashgun, ignoring pre-flash pulses even in red-eye reduction modes. In standalone setups, the wireless RF triggering system works a treat.
