But with many her­itage rail­ways you can ap­ply for a spe­cial per­mit that al­lows you to do just that. This not only gives you great po­si­tions close to the trains as they pass, but it can also help you get to dif­fer­ent van­tage points away from the track more quickly on foot. A per­mit for the Sev­ern Val­ley Rail­way costs £25 a year, but is only avail­able to those who have paid for mem­ber­ship of the rail­way (a fur­ther £20 a year).
