Phil says… Members of the public are not usually allowed by the side of the track for obvious reasons! But with many heritage railways you can apply for a special permit that allows you to do just that. This not only gives you great positions close to the trains as they pass, but it can also help you get to different vantage points away from the track more quickly on foot. A permit for the Severn Valley Railway costs £25 a year, but is only available to those who have paid for membership of the railway (a further £20 a year).
