OUR APPRENTICE says …

I’ve always struggled with panning, but Seb told me that you need to master this technique as you need to move the camera to track the subject for every shot of mountain biking you take. So he took me right back to basics, getting me to change my grip on the lens (see right), and insisting that you need to keep panning even after you have pressed the shutter. In this shot, our pro rider Chris Smith was riding at a good pace but I managed to keep him reasonably sharp while blurring the background enough to give the impression of action. Although we avoided the rain, it was incredibly dark in the forest on this winter’s morning and we had to shoot at a much higher ISO than I had imagined.
