On a bright day with light overcast, a one-stop (0.3ND) filter will usually be enough. On a dark and stormy day, the sky will be brighter compared to the foreground, and you’ll probably need a two-stop (0.6ND) filter. It’s rare to need a three-stop (0.9ND) filter – keep these for dawn, sunsets, and when you’re shooting into the sun.
