As it’s Nikon-specific, Capture NX-D is the perfect tool for post-shoot tweaking

Exposure compensation

You can’t change the actual exposure settings (shutter speed, lens aperture and ISO) after the photograph has been taken, but you can use the extra dynamic range of NEF files to apply small exposure compensation adjustments.

White Balance

The original shot was taken with Auto White Balance, which left it looking rather ‘cold’. The White Balance menu offers the standard Nikon presets, and the Direct Sunlight preset gives a much warmer, more natural-looking result.

Picture Control

The camera was set to shoot using the Standard Nikon Picture Control, which can be a little harsh for portraits. It’s possible to change this too, however, and the Portrait Picture Control delivers softer contrast and smoother skin tones.
