Add lay­ers of mean­ing by jux­ta­pos­ing subjects

ho­to­graph some­one or some­thing on its own, and you will have a pic­ture of what your sub­ject looks like. Add a sig­nif­i­cant ob­ject or per­son, though, and you can set up con­nec­tions and lev­els of mean­ing. At its sim­plest level, this might be con­trol­ling the back­ground to give a con­text. So, if you like pho­tograph­ing funny signs, show some back­ground to say why it is funny in the same im­age. You should never have to ex­plain what is re­mark­able about a sub­ject, you should have pho­tographed it. One of the most ef­fec­tive ways to do this is to vary your an­gle: walk around the sub­ject and you can pho­to­graph it with a dif­fer­ent back­ground, or bring two ob­jects closer to­gether in the frame.
