How it works

The mist effect isn’t applied directly to the image itself; instead, it’s added to new layers on top so that it can be adjusted separately. These layers are set to the ‘screen’ blending mode, which combines the mist with the background image more realistically. The other advantage of using layers is that you can then use a layer ‘mask’ so that the mist doesn’t cover up objects in the foreground, like the posts on the bank of the river.
