Sir Ranulph Fiennes, London, 2014

Martin Hartley found inspiration in the polar portraits of Herbert Ponting, the photographer on Scott’s ill-fated 1912 conquest of the South Pole, for his portrait of Sir Ranulph Fiennes. Hartley says, “I wanted to see if I could emulate Ponting’s style with a genuine explorer of today. Ran would have been among Scott’s men had he been alive in that era. Also, it was my tribute to Ponting and to Ran.”
