My JPEGs are 6MB, but my NEFs are 24MB. Is this nor­mal?

When you make a JPEG from a RAW file, two things hap­pen: 1) Ex­tra un­used data in the RAW file is dis­carded. 2) The JPEG for­mat uses so­phis­ti­cated com­pres­sion tech­niques that can mas­sively re­duce the file size with neg­li­gi­ble ef­fect on im­age qual­ity.

The ex­tra in­for­ma­tion in RAW files is what en­ables you to change the White Bal­ance, ex­po­sure and colour set­tings later
