Studio flash heads can be bulky, but the A-Lux 302 is literally pint-sized and weighs just 363 grams, so it should slot straight into your bag. Power comes from a chocolate-bar-sized rechargeable battery. It’s good for around 250 full-power flashes per charge and can be refuelled using a typical USB phone charger.

Such dinky dimensions do mean headline power specs aren’t dazzling. A power rating of 120Ws/GN30 means the M302E works best with close-range subjects. One aspect in which it does excel is its 1/3000-second flash duration. That’s fast enough to freeze almost any action shot, providing you sync your Nikon using a fast flash trigger. There are only three flash power settings, each tuneable up or down by a fifth of a stop.

Build quality lacks the finesse of the big brands’ offerings, but this is a great way to light action when you’re on the go.
