Split photo/daypacks are a good idea if you don’t have too much camera kit. Usually the lower compartment is dedicated to photo gear. Move the adjustable dividers so that your camera, lenses, flashgun and other accessories fit well.

Sling action

Many recently designed backpacks have a side opening flap. By taking off one shoulder strap and pivoting the bag around to the front, you can get access to your camera and lens without having to take the bag off completely.

Through the top

You can often remove the main compartment divider of split photo/daypacks (and the personal items inside, then reconfigure the other dividers to accommodate a camera with a really long lens, plus a couple of other lenses and accessories.
