Be­fore join­ing NASA in 1996, Dr Don­ald Pet­tit worked for 12 years at the fa­mous Los Alamos Na­tional Lab­o­ra­tory in Ari­zona, where his re­search in­cluded re­duced grav­ity fluid flow.

Dr Pet­tit has spent a to­tal of 370 days in space on three sep­a­rate mis­sions be­tween Novem­ber 2002 and July 2012.

Dr Pet­tit lived aboard the In­ter­na­tional Space Sta­tion (ISS) from 23 Novem­ber 2002 to 3 May 2003, and again for more than six months from 21 De­cem­ber 2011 to 1 July 2012.

He was also aboard the Space Shut­tle En­deav­our on a 16-day mis­sion dur­ing Novem­ber 2008, which de­liv­ered a new kitch­enette, two bed­rooms and a bath­room to the ISS.
