Swears by prime lenses for his award-winning travel images and portraiture

I’m passionate about travel photography and portraiture. I won the 2014 Cathay Pacific Travel Photographer of the Year award in New Zealand, and was the New Zealand National Winner in the 2013 Sony World Photography Awards. I’ve owned several Nikons over the years, most recently a D800 [1] and D600, and I’m about to upgrade to a D4s. I really love my prime lenses; my favourite is the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art lens, which is wide enough for travel shots and great for general photography too. I also have four Nikon lenses: the AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8G ED, the AF-S 105mm f/2.8G IF ED VR Macro [2], the AF-S 85mm f/1.8G [3] and the AF 20mm f/2.8D [4]. I’ll often use HDR processing to bring out the details in images, especially if a scene includes deep shadows that don’t look their best due to poor light – I use Photomatix Pro for this. I’m off to Cambodia in February (the trip is my prize for winning Travel Photographer of the Year) which will offer fantastic opportunities for photography. I’d like to develop my portraiture.
