Stay at the shallow end

One of the reasons this shot works is that there’s a sense of depth, with the figures in the frame getting less blurred as your eye moves from the foreground people to the bust. To achieve this effect, Damien advised Paulo to manually focus on the bust, and then set his 50mm lens to its widest aperture of f/1.4 to blur out everything except the bust.
