G-Technology G-DRIVE
£290, $380 with Thunderbolt 4TB
Quality oozes from every vent in this drive’s aluminium case. It’ll perfectly complement an original Mac Pro and it packs plenty of punch with a 7200RPM hard drive.
We found the G-DRIVE only fractionally slower when dealing with video files than the ioSafe and diskAshur drives, but it came out on top of the latter in our image file tests, with a 155 megabyte per second read rate. These results were achieved using USB 3.0 – the drive’s Thunderbolt port should in theory unleash even more speed, but USB 3.0 is already faster than the read/write rate of the drive, so don’t expect Thunderbolt to make any appreciable difference.
