“As well as shoot­ing head-and-shoul­der por­traits, take a step back and in­clude as much of the en­vi­ron­ment as pos­si­ble,” sug­gests John. “This can be im­por­tant to the sto­ry­line of your pic­tures. Take notes as well. A pic­ture may be worth 1000 words, but if you have ex­tra in­for­ma­tion about lo­ca­tions and the names of the peo­ple that you en­counter, then you’ll add value to your im­ages, es­pe­cially if you’re look­ing to sell them. Shoot both por­trait- and land­scape-ori­en­tated pho­tos too, as clients usu­ally re­quire one or the other.”
