Ditch the tripod

John advised Luis to shoot handheld despite the very low light levels. “Using a tripod is an option, but I often find it cumbersome, and it reduces your ability to move quickly and find different angles,” reveals John. “I always prefer to shoot handheld and lean against walls, trees or anything that will help to provide some additional steadiness. Of course everyone’s mileage will vary when it comes to getting sharp handheld shots and not everyone has the ability to shoot at 1/15 or 1/20 sec. The weight of your equipment plays a part, too. For these types of situations, my trusty lightweight 20mm f/2.8 lens is a killer.”
