Control the light

“Any artificial lighting you add has the potential to overwhelm the moody ambient light you were trying to capture in the first place,” explains John, “so it needs to be used with care.” Using a continuous LED light source similar to the one that John uses enables you to position the light precisely to achieve the effect you want – such as the striking side-lighting here – but some Nikon speedlights, such as John’s SB-800, include a ‘modelling flash’ function. This provides a flickering blip of illumination to help you judge where the main flash lighting will fall.
