Domke Chronicle £270, $300

Get your hands on a Chronicle and it’s soon clear that a lot of thought has gone into its design. Nifty features like expandable side pockets help keep the bag as compact as possible, yet there’s space inside for a D810 body and up to four lenses.

You won’t have to fumble around trying to get at your Nikon, as if there isn’t time to unlatch the carabiner clips fastening the main flap, there’s always a fast-access zip slot across the top of the bag. Velcro silencing for the main flap keeps you inconspicuous, as does the bag’s neutral styling. The bag is available in waterproofed black, khaki and military green finishes, and it’s worth noting that prices vary considerably according to fabric. The black and military green RuggedWear options are generally the most expensive.

It’s tough to find fault with the Chronicle; there’s all the space, style and features you could want
