Nikon 1 J4
For a camera with interchangeable lenses, the 1 J4 offers slim pickings – and we mean that in a good way
Nikon 1 J4 + 10-30mm PD-Zoom
arrower, shorter and only a little deeper than the Coolpix P7800, this is the smallest and most lightweight Nikon 1 camera outfit in the group. With the 10-30mm VR kit lens it measures just 100mm by 60mm by 57mm and weighs a mere 317g, so it’s also lighter than the P7800. Slimline stowage is helped by the 10-30mm lens automatically retracting when the camera is switched off, and popping out for duty when it’s switched on again. The power zoom operates smoothly from a fly-by-wire ring on the barrel of the lens, which gives an effective zoom range of 27-81mm, thanks to the 2.7x crop factor of Nikon 1 cameras and their one-inch sensors.
The J4 has a lot in common with the range-topping V3,
Nincluding the same image sensor and EXPEED 4A processor, plus the same hybrid contrast/phasedetection autofocus system with 171 contrast areas and 105 phase-detection points. You also get the same speedy maximum drive rate of 20 frames per second, boosted to 60 frames per second if you don’t need autofocus after the first shot in a sequence. Favourite mod cons of older 1-series cameras are retained, like Best Moment Capture and Motion Snapshot.
Autofocusing is faster than in any of the Coolpix cameras in the group, and this is especially noticeable in low lighting conditions. Indeed, autofocus speed is very similar to that of the two D-SLRs in the group, when fitted with their 18-55mm kit lenses. Metering and auto white balance are reliable and consistent, and while the adjustment of shooting parameters is heavily menubased, navigating them is sped along by the touchscreen.
