CREATE A HIGH-CONTRAST IMAGE
Ensure you have some black shadows and white highlights in your shot
Convert to mono
Browse to Mono_start.NEF. Go to the Edit panel. Click the Picture Control icon. In the Picture Control panel, choose Latest Picture Control. Choose Monochrome. Boost Clarity to 3 to increase midtone contrast. Set Filter Effect to Red to darken the blue parts of the sky.
Show clipped shadows
Click the Tone (Detail) icon (see 10, above). To reveal missing shadow detail, drag the Shadow Protection slider up to 60. The D-Lighting slider can bring out detail in both shadows and highlights. Set it to 40. Press Shift + S to display only the under-exposed, blackest shadows.
