En­sure you have some black shad­ows and white high­lights in your shot

Con­vert to mono

Browse to Mono_s­tart.NEF. Go to the Edit panel. Click the Pic­ture Con­trol icon. In the Pic­ture Con­trol panel, choose Latest Pic­ture Con­trol. Choose Monochrome. Boost Clar­ity to 3 to in­crease mid­tone con­trast. Set Fil­ter Ef­fect to Red to darken the blue parts of the sky.

Show clipped shad­ows

Click the Tone (De­tail) icon (see 10, above). To re­veal miss­ing shadow de­tail, drag the Shadow Pro­tec­tion slider up to 60. The D-Light­ing slider can bring out de­tail in both shad­ows and high­lights. Set it to 40. Press Shift + S to dis­play only the un­der-ex­posed, blackest shad­ows.
