For shoot­ing birds in flight, a gim­bal head (see page 124) keeps the cam­era and lens bal­anced while smoothly track­ing ver­ti­cally as well as hor­i­zon­tally.

Vari­able-aper­ture tele­photo zooms tend to ex­tend greatly in phys­i­cal length at longer zoom set­tings, whereas con­stan­ta­per­ture tele­photo zooms gen­er­ally re­main fixed.
