Wider, faster, better
Whereas most FX-format standard zooms shorten to a focal length of 24mm, DX lenses tend to only give an ‘effective’ shortest focal length of 27mm, so you lose out at the wide-angle end. One remedy is the Nikon 16-85mm, which gives an effective zoom range of 24-127.5mm. If you prefer better and faster to ‘wider’, though, go for the awesome Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM | A. It has a super-fast constant aperture and delivers spectacular image quality, even if it’s lacking in telephoto reach.
