The secondhand option

NikonAF300mmf/4ED From £250, $400

NPhoto - - Ultimate Upgrades! -

Reasonably compact and not

overly heavy at 1.3kg, this Nikon lens went out of production

back in 2000. It has an old-school aperture ring

that’s of no use on a D-SLR, and it lacks an internal autofocus

actuator, so focusing is a strictly manual affair on

cameras like the D3300 and D5500. However, it’s built

like a tank, complete with full metal jacket. For sturdiness

and robustness, it puts most of Nikon’s newer

plastic-barrelled lenses to shame. As a prime lens, it has a 300mm

focal length and nothing less. However, with

a widest aperture of f/4, it’s a full f/stop faster than

70-300mm zoom lenses. This old-school Nikon also comes

with a tripod collar and built- retractable lens hood. in,

Nikon’s latest 300mm f/4 lens (pictured) costs

around £1640/ $2000, making the old-style 300mm a massively cheaper

second-hand buy
