I have been trying to capture a shot of a red squirrel in the snow for a while. Living in County Durham, one of my chances for the reds is at Derwent Valley. Back in February 2015, I was checking the webcam online at Derwent reservoir’s yacht club to find there was a slight covering of snow that morning. When I arrived I set myself up at Pow Hill and waited to see if anything turned up. After an hour, and frozen to the bone, I decided to head back to the car. As I walked back I noticed something in the pines around me, so decided to sit at the foot of a tree, and sure enough two reds appeared. After around five to 10 minutes they retreated back into the woods. On reviewing the images on the back of the camera I was thrilled to see some great shots.

This was one of my entries for the BBC Countryfile calendar 2016. You can imagine how thrilled I was to learn that it has been accepted as the January image. Walter Bulmer, Co Durham Congratulations! It’s a great shot of a rare animal.

Persistence paid off for Walter
