The judges felt sev­eral things helped to make this im­age of the aurora bo­re­alis stand out from all the oth­ers that were en­tered. First, there’s the way the lines of the aurora draw the viewer’s eye into the pic­ture. Then there’s the reflections of those lead­ing lines in the wa­ter, smoothed by a long ex­po­sure. Fi­nally, the bridge also echoes the lines of the aurora, while the bright points of light on it dis­rupt things; as bright as the green trails of the aurora, but more colour­ful and geo­met­ric, they pro­vide a fit­ting fo­cal point, and a nice con­trast to the more or­ganic feel of the lights above and be­low.
