Be­fore even get­ting to Donna Nook, David ad­vised me to do some re­search, so I would have an idea of the sort of pho­tos I wanted to get be­fore­hand. This gave me some­thing to aim to­wards. It also forced me to think about which lenses to take, whether I needed a tri­pod, and if I should get up high or down low. With all the prepa­ra­tion in the world, though, we couldn’t have bar­gained for such a great shot straight off the bat. This beau­ti­ful seal pup was pos­ing, as if for us, right at the front of the beach. I knew I wanted to get an in­ti­mate por­trait, and this was a won­der­ful start
